A WOF and a service are not the same thing

A Warrant of Fitness is a general safety check at a point in time. The NZ Transport Agency's warrant of fitness guidance lists what the inspection covers - tyres, brakes, structure and rust, lights, glass, wipers, doors, seat belts, airbags, the speedometer, steering and suspension, the exhaust and the fuel system. It also says what a WOF does not look at, including the condition of the engine, clutch, gearbox and differential. That is the job of a regular service.

NZTA also makes the point that keeping a vehicle up to WOF standard is the owner's job all year, not just on inspection day. Tyres that pass today still need replacing as soon as the tread reaches the legal minimum. A service in between warrants is the easiest way to catch that kind of wear early, alongside the oil, filters and fluids a WOF never checks.

Booking a service and a WOF together
